Larry Doby, often overlooked by baseball historians and collectors, was a trailblazing player who made significant contributions to the sport. Doby debuted with the Newark Eagles in the Negro League, winning a championship in 1946 with teammate Monte Irvin. In 1947, he joined the Cleveland Indians, becoming the first African-American player in the American League. The following season, Doby and teammate Satchel Paige became the first African Americans to win the World Series.
A multi-sport athlete, Doby briefly played professional basketball in the American Basketball League with the Paterson Crescents, becoming the league's first African-American player. After retiring from baseball, he worked as the director of communications for the New Jersey Nets.
Doby was a seven-time All-Star and a two-time American League home-run leader. After playing for the Indians, Chicago White Sox, and Detroit Tigers, he became one of the first Americans to play professionally in Japan in 1962. Doby also became the second African-American manager in MLB history, taking over the Chicago White Sox in 1978.
